BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE ESSAY: The Explication Essay is a composition that requires the writer to do a close reading of a work or a portion of a work, carefully analyzing one or more of its elements.

PROMPT (THE ASSIGNMENT): Consider the settings in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. Center your essay on any 3 settings presented in this short story. In a 500-word essay, analyze how Welty’s portrayal of Phoenix Jackson fluctuates as travels throughout her journey, detailing how each setting influences the audience’s perception of Phoenix. Be sure to discuss a setting at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

FORMATTING CRITERIA:

Your essay should be in MLA format and should include the following:

conclusion.)
