Instructions for Final Case Study
In this essay, you will analyze five below Google technologies that are current under research and development,
While Google is best known for their search and advertising technologies, they also have a multi-billion dollar research and development department that works on cutting edge technologies ranging from self-driving automobiles to renewable energy.
The 5 projects for analysis is as follows:
In addition to Googles Self-driving automobiles, the other four Google Projects I will Analyze is Google Glass, Home Automation and Smart Thermostats, Google Fiber, and Project Wings. Here are some of the interesting findings about these projects:
Google Glass: These wearable computing devices display user information for hands-free use. What makes this device special is it is pretty much the most advanced wearable mobile technology thus far. Additionally, it uses a private channel of communication exclusive to the user.
Google Home Automation & Thermostats: These are a series of devices developed by Google to help control your home with one voice or from the touch of an app. Google assistant technology is compatible with a number of devices from different manufactures to turn your home into a smart home.
Google Fiber: With up to 1000 Mbps it would be 100 times faster than the average internet on the market. Something I found interesting on the internet is that after deploying in 2010 and after expanding into 6 metro areas in 6 years, in 2016 Google announced that they would be pausing any future deployments of Google Fiber. A review from Blair Levin at the Harvard Business Review mentions that this market experiment may have been doomed from start. He sights that because Google tried to disrupt this market on their own deploying gigabit per second service, instead of partnering up with major providers where they could of expanded into adjacent markets such as smart homes and video they ended up failing (2018).
Project Wings: Tucked away in secret section of Google’s facility is an area called Google X where Project Wings are being developed. This drone-based delivery system would help delivery goods to people in need. I like how on their website they did not differentiate the needs of the 2 kids home with no food, or the emergency workers in a crisis, project wing would be there to help them.
Self Driving Cars- Waymo was Googles original self driving project that began in 2009. According to am article I found by the Independent, Googles self driving car got stopped by the police for driving too slow. I know a number of companies are working on this initiative so it will be interesting to see what comes of it and what improvements are made.
