Find and identify 18 different retail primary packages
Individual Assignment: Retail Primary Package Scavenger Hunt. As the semester progresses, you will become familiar with the
major materials we use in packaging, and will be able to readily identify packages made of these various materials and
package forms. In this assignment, you will also need to explain the typical applications, properties, advantages, etc. for
each package material/type that will be covered in the online course material.
Instructions: Find and identify 18 different retail primary packages (one for each type) made predominately of the following
packaging material/type. The package, NOT the product!
(1) Glass
(2) Steel
(3) Aluminum
(4) Metalized Film
(5) Paper (not paperboard)
(6) Paperboard (not corrugated fibreboard)
(7) Corrugated Fibreboard (primary pkg)
(8) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
(9) Polypropylene (PP)
(10) Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
(11) Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
(12) Your choice: a Chub Package, or an Aseptic Laminated Drinkbox, or a Composite Can
(13)A Food product packaged in a single crimped end collapsible metal or plastic squeeze Tube (not a pouch)
(14)A Non-Food product packaged in a single crimped end collapsible metal or plastic squeeze Tube (not a pouch)
(15) A Food product packaged in an Aerosol (not a spray pump)
(16) A Non-Food product packaged in an Aerosol (not a spray pump)
(17) A Primary package with a Child Resistant (CR) packaging feature *additional description required
(18) A Non-Drug primary package with a Tamper Evident (TE) packaging feature *additional descriptions required
For EACH of the retail primary packages listed above (#1-#18):
Take a picture of the ACTUAL retail primary package/product system for each of the different 18 items. Your name and
student ID (PID) on a simple sign, typed or legibly handwritten, must be in each of the 18 pictures (see example below).
Images from the internet will not be accepted.
Write a brief description of the retail primary package/product system:
(1) What is the product (e.g. 16 oz. Bush’s Homestyle Baked Beans)
(2) Where did you find it (e.g. Walmart in Los Angeles, California)
(3) Describe the package type (e.g. metal can, pouch…) and the predominate packaging material (e.g. HDPE, steel….) your
package is made of, its construction, SPI code, etc. Do not describe the product itself, BUT, the package has to have a
product, not an empty package (e.g. a picture of an empty corrugated box, or bottle).
(4) Briefly describe why you think this predominate packaging material is suitable OR is not suitable for the product it
contains.
NOTE: For #17 also clearly describe the feature that makes the package child-resistant. This description will be number (5).
NOTE: For #18 also explain what makes the package tamper-evident. This explanation will be number (5).
AND does the package identify the tamper- evident feature as tamper-evident, or does it refer to the feature using some other
terminology (such as a freshness seal), or does it say nothing at all about the tamper-evident feature that you have
identified? This response will be number (6).
You may not source any retail package pictures from the internet. Challenge yourself, look hard, and have some fun locating
all 18 different packages for your assignment. Go to local retail stores, specialty shops, convenience stores, home/garden
stores, etc. not your dorm room nor home. Be sure it has a product that is being packaged! It must be the primary packaging,
not secondary or tertiary packaging.
File Saving and Naming Format: Your final assignment must be saved as a PDF. Save the file name starting with your last
(family) name plus 101SS16.

Dropbox on D2L: Upload as a pdf format document only (do NOT paste) into the D2L Dropbox for this Individual Assignment
before the deadline. Only ONE submission will be accepted, so be sure your document is complete prior to uploading to the
Dropbox. Please note that the Individual Assignment Dropbox has a deadline, so allow sufficient time in case of unforeseen
technical difficulties. This is an 8 weeks-long assignment, do not procrastinate!
NOTE: Resize each picture so they are easily inserted into your document and can easily upload into the D2L Dropbox. Don’t
make the file too large to upload. You don’t need super high resolution pictures. This is not a photography or Photoshop
class. Previous successful submissions are 2 MB in size or less.
If you don’t know how to take a picture and insert into a document to make a simple, good looking organized report, and save
into a pdf file format, then ask your family and friends for assistance, or watch a YouTube video or google search how to do
it. Complete this early and practice. Then, do your own work.
Be sure you include your name and your student ID number (typed or legibly handwritten) in each picture when you are at the
stores during your scavenger hunt! Or simply include your Student ID card in each picture. Below is an example:

each of the 18 package materials/type listed above. Don’t forget to add the additional responses for #17 and #18.

11) Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
1) This product is 1000 Assorted Cable Ties by General Electric.
2) I found it in the hardware department at the Meijer Store in East Lansing, Michigan.
3) This package is predominately made of a cylindrical shaped PVC reclosable rigid plastic container, SPI code #3. This
specific package material (PVC) is used mostly for clamshells and trays for the electronics industry. PVC is commonly used
for blister package designs. It can be found in the industries that bottle non-food products, as well as stretch film.
4) I believe this is an excellent package material for this product. PVC plastic is extremely strong, which will help with
human interactions due to the fact that this is a reusable container for a hardware product. Also, PVC has excellent clarity,
which makes it easier for the consumer to view the product and know how many cable ties are left and of which sizes. This PVC
package can also be used as a reusable storage container for the product.
