All Souls presents modern New England as a place with specialized needs and unique problems. How does the history of New England contribute to racial problems that are different than the rest of the country? How does community and ethnicity factor into these issues? Are there solutions to these problems, or does the arrow of time inexorably alter race relations? How does gentrification factor into this? Consider how elements from Metalious like zoning poverty out of a town compares to modern racial and poverty-related issues.

Please compose an essay of 5-6 pages in length. The format should be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point pica, and 1” margins. There should be a cover page that is stapled in the top left corner. Your name, IIAMST 375, and Essay#3 should appear in the bottom right corner. Please include a creative title, possibly colonified, centered on the cover page only that expresses some type of connection to the text or your sources in an interesting way (there should not be another title, name, or section number on the first formal page). You must have at least two substantial outside source for this essay. The essay should be in 3rd person exclusively. Flawless MLA format is required (7th, 8th, or 8th Ed. w/updates). It is due April 24th Tuesday 2:30 pm sharp and no later and for no reason other than a Dean of Students’ release form. You may submit it early, but only if you arrange to do so.

Your essay must focus on the text All Souls as its primary source; however, it is expected that you refer to at least one of the other texts used in this class. The texts can be emerson’s self reliance, peyton place, or bell jar, or even all three of them.

The options presented here are prompts and you do not need to answer all the questions in a prompt. You may also expand on the prompts as you see fit. Select from the following options:

#1 – All Souls presents modern New England as a place with specialized needs and unique problems.

#2 – All Souls is as much a novel about mental health as it is about race and crime. In fact, mental health issues allow MacDonald’s mother to give purpose to her own life once she leaves Southie. How have perceptions of and attitudes towards mental health changed since the book was published? What historical issues regarding mental health keep surfacing even in the face of better treatment? Consider how elements from Bouley, Metalious, and Plath deal with these issues as well, and how certain issues, such as the treatment of schizophrenia through electroshock, seem to be persistent themes even into the 21st century. What elements regarding mental health are specific to New England, and what elements are universal?

#3 – All Souls reveals that New England has had a persistent drug and self-medication problem for decades. How does the novel predict the current heroin crisis? In what ways does drug abuse and mental health interact with each other? If drug abuse, depression, suicide, and poverty go hand-in hand, then what makes New England exceptional when it comes to drug use? How much of this is regional and how much of this is national or universal. Consider that Metalious and Plath deal with drugs, alcohol, medication, and suicide and might anticipate the issues presented in MacDonald’s text.

#4 – All Souls presents a New England that is a cultural epicenter for organized crime. How does crime in New England, especially Southie, differ from crime in New York City, Los Angeles, or Chicago? In what ways does ethnicity, regionalism, and cultural pride affect not only types of crime, but also the types of criminals that populate the area? Consider that Jackson and Metalious both portray New England as isolated, aggressive, and lawless. How have those texts created a historic version of New England that, in some ways, made the events in South Boston inevitable?

#5 – All of the texts in class share certain elements with All Souls:

Emerson = Self-Reliance, Violating Tradition, Religious Spirituality

Jackson = Violating Tradition, Aggressive & Dangerous Regionalism, Isolation

Bouley = Violating the Assumption that New Englanders are Exclusionary, Regional Pride, Work Ethic, Isolation, Mental Health

Metalious = Regionalism, Isolation, Mental Health, Violence, Crime, Protectionism, Poverty, Racism, Classism

Plath = Mental Health, Isolation, Violence

MacDonald = Regionalism, Acceptance, Racism, Poverty, Classism, Crime, Violence, Isolation, Pride, Protectionism, Mental Health

In what ways is All Souls an ‘anthem’ text for New England? Does it represent the region is a fair and accurate way, or is it only a ‘Southie Story?’ As the penultimate book in the class, how does it stitch together the core concepts of the other texts and provide a foundation for future academic study of the specialized issues that affect New England?
