1. Our discussion of a leader’s influence within an organization inspires my thoughts regarding the influence of technology on communication. A number of individuals argue that technology continues to influence the ways in which we speak and write. Today, we use text messages, and have found ways to shorten words or phrases to minimize the amount of typing necessary. For example, we may use “kinda” rather than “kind of”, “idk” rather than “I don’t know”, and “LOL” rather than “laughing out loud”.
Class: Do you believe that this type of technologically-influenced jargon influences our academic writing? Does it affect the ability of small children to learn to spell and write? What are the similarities and differences between this type of influence and a leader’s influence within an organization?

2. One of the ways to ensure ethical behavior during the dissertation process is to define a study as much as possible. There are multiple ways to define a study. One way is to define by way of the method to be utilized for analysis of data. However, a study can also be divided by region and time period. Because a dissertation should be an area of research that has not been studied before, defining a study as much as possible will increase the likelihood that you can ethically make this claim.
As an example, it may be difficult to claim that a study of leadership has never been studied. However, it may be more appropriate to claim that the following more defined leadership study has never been conducted: A Spring 2016 study of the potential relationship between the perceptions of high school principals in Portland, Oregon (regarding their leadership effectiveness) and the number of years as a principal. The latter is much more specific and defined, and improves the likelihood that one can ethically make the claim that this particular study has not yet been completed. The latter is at least defined by region and time period.
What do you perceive to be the benefits of defining your study as much as possible? Does this measure increase the likelihood that one can claim that the study has never been completed in the past? Does this measure guarantee the claim?

3. Expand on the following:
As revealed through assigned reading, specifically “Enron’s Code of ethics” (2006), it is clear that a code of ethics does not guarentee ethical behavior within an organization. Leaders, especially those in higher-level positions, were the ones engaging in the unethical behavior. As is seen, the outcome for the organization is catastrophic. Negative publicity, criminal investigations, prison sentences for those involved and found guilty and financial doom is the end result of unethical behavior.
Bazerman and Tenbrunsel (2011) explains that although leaders behaviors are often unintentionally unethical, the results to the organization are not any less severe than if the behaviors were deliberate. Often times those in higher level leadership positions are blinded or overlook unethical practices or neglect to consider everyone who will or could be impacted by decisions made by or for an organization.
Johnson (2015) explains that a code of ethics is a set of guidelines, which clearly state and explain an organization’s purpose, what can be expected from the organization and clearly states expected behavior(s) from the organization’s leaders and members. Just because certain behaviors are prohibited does not mean all organizational members will abide by them or enforce them in the when unethical behavior is reported or witnessed (Forbes, 2013).
