Symbols are important in our culture and often describe who we are. We discussed in class a few symbols of a
romanticized south such as the Confederate battle flag and statues of Confederate soldiers. In his writings Faulkner uses
the symbol of Miss Emily to make a point. Why is southern society so respectful of Emily? Who does the character of Emily
symbolize southern society? Think about the skeleton of Homer lying in the bed. What do you think this represents?
