As a student at Central Penn College, you are a part of an academic community whose purpose is to acquire and disseminate knowledge. For this assignment I’d like to think back to a time in your life when you had to adopt an academic voice to participate in an academic community, either in high school or college. Think of a time either 1) when you were confident and knowledgeable in an academic setting or 2) when you wished you were more confident and knowledgeable about an academic subject.
For example, you could write about a time when you answered a question in class that contributed to a larger discussion. Or you could discuss a time when you were talking to classmates outside of class about a topic. Or it could be a time when you worked on an assignment. Or you could write about a time that you had a conversation with a teacher. Or you could discuss when you wrote your college applications. Whatever experience you choose to write about, you should explain what you did, or what you could have done better, to participate in the academic community.
It may also help to think of this as a type of code-switching; think of a time when you did adopt or should have adopted an academic voice to better convey your ideas.
In this narrative essay, you should discuss one specific moment or event in your life experience. And remember that narrative essays should be personal in nature and conversational in tone.For this particular narrative, you will apply the concept of standard, edited American English and academic writing as a genre by discussing how you, as a student, see yourself as an academic.
Your essay should be between 500 and 700 words (about 2 pages in Microsoft Word).
