English 101: Advertisement Analysis Assignment Guidelines (75 points)
As discussed in class, rhetoric is all around us, and most notably, in the form of advertisements.
Also, see Ramage Chapter 10. For this assignment, here are the following guidelines:
1. Pick three ads. These can be of your choosing, but they must demonstrate a prior
relationship. For example, they can be three movie posters advertising the same movie. Or,
they can be Marlboro cigarette ads from three different decades. Or, they can be three ads
from the same company (such as Nike). Or, they can three ads advertising the same product
but from different companies.
2. First describe: what does the ad look like? What is the main focus of the ad? What colors
are used? What text is there, and what font? What about setting and the placement of
elements? What is in the background and what is in the foreground?
3. Then analyze. Consider the following questions:
i. What is the purpose of this document? How do you know?
ii. Who is the intended audience? How do you know?
iii. What is the context of this document? Where and when was it published?
What is it responding to?
