Introduction Slavery was a period of bondage where individuals were sold from one nation to another and subjected to total control by a master. The United States took part in the slave trade as a legal institution of human chattel between the 18th and 19th century after it gained independence and before the end of the civil war.[1] In my essay, I shall take an in-depth look at the role of slavery in the growth of the United States.[1] [0] Black slaves played a key role, though voluntary and unrewarded in laying the economic foundation of the United States particularly in the south.[0] These black slaves worked in the sugar and cotton plantations in the Southern region. Also, these slaves worked on the rice, indigo and tobacco farms of the Southern seaboard. The Northern businessmen made great returns from slavery and investments in the Southern plantations although slavery was not widespread in the North.[0] (Routh 2017, 28) The blacks also played a leading role in the cultural development of the United States.[0] These people were from diverse backgrounds with different cultures, norms, beliefs, and

values different from those of the United States. They participated in the development of Southern speech, music, folklore, dancing, and food.[0] Additionally, they blended they African cultural traits with those of the American hence the development of new ways of doing things in the United States.[0] (Berlin 2015, 96) Crispus Attucks, a famous former slave was killed in the Boston Massacre of 1770, was the first martyr to the cause of the American freedom from Great Britain.[0] During the American rebellion, 5000 black soldiers and some Americans fought on the American side.[0] =====================3/4====================== THE ROLE OF SLAVERY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE USA 3

After this uprising, some slaves were freed especially soldiers. However, with the ratification of the American constitution which considered a slave as three-fifths of a person for purposes of taxation and representation in the Congress.[0] [3] As a result, the number of representatives from the slave states increased and prevented the Congress from abolishing the African slave trade.[0] The first African American leaders emerged during this period of slavery in the United States.[0] [10] [11] These leaders were the free blacks who were technically free and posed some threats to the problem of slavery. However, they suffered many restrictions in law and custom imposed on the slaves. These free black leaders continued to pursue the abolition of the slave trade by forming organizations such as the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, started in 1816 and led by Bishop Richard Allen of Philadelphia.[0] At the beginning of 1830, these leaders began meeting and organized on ways of abolishing the slave trade. Their ideas were vital in the development of Pan-African nationalism under the headship of AME Bishop Henry M.[0] [9] Turner half a century later. These leaders eventually became American nationals. Lastly, slavery introduced the idea of colonialism to the United States. The United States was able to tap resources such as raw materials for her industries from these countries. The country had plenty of human labor form the slaves and they needed to develop their industries and the economy. The United States increased its export during this period since they produced more than enough. Also, their economy grew mainly in the Southern areas where they relied on slave trade to run their activities. The Northern region increased its returns due to the better production of commodities in the nation. (Evsey 2017, 12) In conclusion, slavery though a negative activity, it had a positive impact on the growth and development of the United States in the world.[4] [5] [2] [8] … =====================4/4====================== THE ROLE OF SLAVERY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE USA 4
