• 1st Concisely outline a health concern you’re interested in addressing (My topic ALS). What is ALS? What causes AlS? Who gets AlS? Statistics? Discuss history,( you many share the story of Lou Gehrig’s). You may add to this.
• 2nd the physical side of the health issue and include risk factors, symptoms/presentation, how it affects various systems of the body, and prognosis. Please be sure to discuss treatment options and the burden that treatment or the health issue itself has on day-to-day physical capabilities. For example, if surgery is required, what are the limitations a patient will experience (e.g. length of time in the hospital, recovery etc.) or perhaps a type of drug might make the patient very tired, impact memory and/or limit the types of activities usually performed for a certain time-frame.All information should be cited properly. These sections should be fairly concise and you don’t need to go into minute detail regarding the different types of treatments that may be used to address a problem. You should mention, however, the main treatment options and note the side effects and benefits.
• 3rd The impact of the disease psychologically. Some questions you may want to address include: how does this disease impact daily functioning? Work? Relationships? What are the specific psychological challenges faced by individuals with the health concern? Is depression or anxiety common? What types of actions are necessary in dealing with the health concern (e.g. daily injections, medication regimen, rest etc.) and how does a patient’s mood, outlook, psychological resources, etc. impact coping?You should be able to find research articles that describe these types of psychological challenges for the issue you’ve chosen.
• 4th I’d like you to include a section addressing the types of research-based interventions that have been used to help patients deal with the specific challenges of their health issue. For example, there is research that shows how peer-support group share beneficial to the adjustment of teens with diabetes or how communication training is useful with couples when the wife is diagnosed with breast cancer. These should be studies from peer-reviewed journals and you should reference at least 4 studies. Don’t be afraid to critique a study if you find flaws or have unanswered questions.
• 5th Finally, wrap it up with a conclusion that provides an overview of your findings.
