Analysis of a Business Article Assignment

For this assignment, please prepare a one page (single-spaced, size 11 font) critical analysis of an article found in a business publication or in the business section of a publication.

A pre-approved list of articles will be provided on HARVEY for you to choose from.  You must choose an article from the list.

The goal of this assignment is to examine an article to determine how effective it makes an argument or point and communicate this

A critical summary is a review that combines a summary and critical commentary.  It involves analysis and evaluation.  You will need to 1) understand the main points of the article, 2) analyze the findings and arguments, 3) evaluate the article on its effectiveness at making an argument or point.

Each critical summary should include:

The Introduction (10 points)

• 1 paragraph of 3 to 4 sentences
• Provide context for the article (background information)
• Give the title, author and source of the article, if known.  Ask Leonelle if unsure.
• Describe the purpose or main ideas of the article in a one sentence statement
• Give an indication of your overall impression in general terms.  Example:  The article was interesting in its approach as it examined the growth of small businesses in the United States.

The Body (30 points)

• 1 to 2 paragraphs of 3 to 4 sentences each
• State what you like and do not like about the article
• Explain your opinion with specific examples from the article
• Explain whether or not the author achieved their intended goal
• Research and define any terms that are new to you or do not make sense
• Discuss the strengths of the article
• Discuss the weaknesses of the article
• Questions to answer in this section include:  Is the author persuasive?  Is the article well written?  Is the article well researched? Is the article interesting?   Did the author achieve their intended goal?

The Conclusion (10 points)

• 1 paragraph of 3 to 4 sentences
• Summarize the body portion of your analysis
• Make a final judgement about the article and the value of the information presented.
