Students will write an analytical essay that compares and contrasts how several different primary sources reflect on or illuminate the same historical development, event, or experience. The paper must be 1500 words. This is approximately 5 pages, doubled-spaced, with 12 point Times New Roman or equivalent font. Title pages and Works Cited pages do not count towards the 1500 word count.
Specific Details:
1) TOPIC: My Lai Massacre.
2) PRIMARY SOURCES: Students must then choose a minimum of two primary sources that represent different perspectives on the chosen topic, event, or experience. Unless your chosen primary sources are quite substantive and rich, you will likely want to choose three to four sources to make sure that you have enough material to work with.
3) ANALYSIS, NOT SUMMARY: The final paper must show your analysis of the primary sources, featuring a thesis statement which captures your main comparisons and contrasts between and among the different sources, especially as they are reflected in the author’s perspective as well as the word choice and organization of the sources. Summarizing should be kept to a minimum.
4) WORKS CITED PAGE: The final paper must include a Works Cited page in correct MLA format.
Special Note on Secondary Sources: You may use the textbook for background information on your topic. You may also consult additional secondary sources if you feel you need additional context and understanding. You should only use secondary sources in the final paper if absolutely necessary (for example, to give background information about the authors of the primary sources). All non-textbook sources used in the final paper must be approved by me.
