I thought this Frontline video was very interesting. I had learned about the Mayfield case before and it is fascinating how specific the difference in minutiae was. It is also interesting how much the FBI and examiners relied on fingerprint identification and even described it as “infallible.” However, one fingerprint examiner was describing how he takes a “leap of faith” when trying to identify fingerprints and that proves that fingerprint identification can never be 100% true.

Peyote is a drug that is natural and native to southern Texas and Mexico. It is a small cactus that has a little white flower growing out of the top that contains mescaline, which imposes hallucinogenic effects on the user, much to those of LSD. Mescaline is a psychadellic alkaloid “which is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is produced in a wide variety of plants and fungi and has several pharmacological applications” (Raspolich, 2017). Also, mescaline is in a group along with morphine that causes many psychoactive effects. Users can enter whats called a peyote trip and people have recalled having deep emotional introspection and nausea. The length of the trip depends on the amount of peyote taken, but on average it can last from 8 to 14 hours. There are some religious organizations such as the Native American Church that uses peyote legally, but it is a Schedule 1 drug that can be used illegally. Some of the physical effects that peyote has are physical euphoria, frequent urination, fast heart rate, dilated pupils, and muscle contractions. For psychological effects, peyote causes color changes, closed and open eye hallucinations, and an increase in libido. There hasn’t been any evidence or reports of psychical dependence or addiction to peyote, but it is quite possible since it causes euphoria (Raspolich, 2017). Peyote has street names such as buttons, peyoto, and mesc, and it can be chewed, smoked with marijuana, grounded into powder, or swallowed (“Peyote and Mescaline,” n.d.).
