Paper details:

PHIL 3301 Moral Philosophy I Dr. Westfall, Summer III 2016
First Paper Ancient Ethics
Please write a philosophical essay in response to the following prompt:
Compare/contrast what factors would be relevant to Socrates, Aristotle, and Epictetus if you were to try to answer the question, “Are you living a good life?”
Requirements for the paper (please read these carefully):
•The paper must be 5-6 pages long, typed, double-spaced, in an 11- or 12-point font with reasonable margins.
•You must use direct quotations from the text to support your claims about what the philosophers say and/or believe. Please set quotations from the text apart from your own words by way of quotation marks, and please give a citation for each quotation in either the MLA or Chicago Manual of Style format (information about both can be found on the UHD Library website). Papers that lack quotations altogether will receive an F for the assignment; papers that only quote from one or two of the philosophers will receive a grade no higher than C.
•You are forbidden from making use of sources other than the writings of Plato, Aristotle, and Epictetus as they appear in the Marino anthology. You may not quote the introductions to the book or to each chapter by Marino himself, nor are you permitted to quote my blog posts (or your classmates’ blog comments) in your papers. Only quote those things written by the philosophers in question. Papers that quote from forbidden sources will receive a severe grade penalty, depending upon the extent and significance of the quotations.
•Please avoid plagiarism in your papers. If you do not know what constitutes plagiarism, please consult the syllabus for this class, the UHD Student Handbook, and/or the Academic Honesty Policy of the University of Houston-Downtown. If you are still uncertain, please contact me with any specific questions you might have.
•The paper is due electronically before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 25. Please submit the paper through Blackboard, although if you have problems with Blackboard, please feel free to e-mail a copy to me. Late papers will not be accepted. The paper is worth 25% of your grade in the class. (Each of the three papers assigned in this class is worth 25% of your grade; the lowest of these will be dropped.)
