I Pedagoa of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire
I Freire. P. (2000). Pedagogy of the oppressed (3oth anniversary ed.). New York, NY: Continuum.
Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a classic book by Paulo Freire. I personally have read some of the chapters in this
I book before this class. I really liked the examples the author includes for the reader to understand the ideas and
issues better. F reire has great ideas on how to approach these issues. Freire also looks deep into the issues of
education in society during the time he wrote the book. But even though this book was written many years ago,
several of the issues still apply to many education systems today. In my opinion, he is the best education critical
pedagogy advocate ever. Freire’s ideas are very unique because, in many of them, he suggests the teacher
become a learner as well.
The reason I selected Pedagogy of the Oppressed is I believe the text has great insight. I really liked the
perspective through which the author looked at the issues. What I like the most about this book is it not only
offers a different perspective on looking at specific issues, but it also offers ideas on how these issues could be
solved. The downside of his work is that many of Freire’s ideas to solve societies’ issues in education are not
being applied today. I believe it is very important for our educational system to start implementing more of
Freire’s ideas to improve our education system. If I would have had a chance to interview Paulo Freire, these
are the five questions I would ask him about Pedagogy of the Oppressed:
1. Have you seen any of the book’s ideas being adopted by the US educational system?
2. Which country has adOpted the most ideas from your book?
3. How did you come up with the ideas to solve the issues you have seen?
4. Is our education system better than at the time when you wrote the book?
5. What is the biggest issue you see in our education system today?
