Due to a shortage of primary care physicians national wide, nurse practitioners can play an important role in expanding primary care capacity in health care industry. For instance, nurse practitioners are highly needed for rural areas and some of southern states where the patient to primary care physician ratio is significantly low (Wadas, 2008). Nurse practitioners are equipped with advanced clinical training and they are most cost-effective. They understand the continuum of care and provide more attentive care at the bedside for the patient. I think that expanding the role of APNs also help physicians to focus on more complex patient cases and advanced clinical procedures.
About a third of all states already allow nurse practitioners to practice without the supervision of a physician. I believe that nurse practitioners should have the same autonomy because researches show that equal or higher satisfaction rates among patients who received primary care from nurse practitioners, compare with patients seen by physicians (Golden, 2013). There is a growing number of people suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma (Golden, 2013). I think that nurse practitioners can play an important role in this crisis. They are qualified health professionals who had extensive training and education on one specialty. It would be unnecessary to have physicians’ supervision since it is not cost effective and it would make doctors even busier so they might have less time for their patients.
