Architecture & Societal Growth- Architecture and Design

Architecture & Societal Growth- Architecture and Design

This short final paper assignment is pretty much the same as your midterm paper. Here you have the opportunity for you to present your understanding of content studied in Modules 4-5 (up through the Middle Ages). Building off your completed sketching assignments, if you found particular interest in any of them, could be a good place to start. And for some of you, building off your Midterm papers would be a GREAT place to start. The topics are the same – feel free to expand on the same topic you chose for the midterm, or go in a new direction. Let me know if you have any ideas for additional topics.

Make sure the work you are focusing on is from these last two modules in the course. Make ties to other eras, and the present day, when applicable, but the focus should be on these time periods.

Make sure to read the comments in the Grading section for your midterm paper – this will help push you in the right direction.

Also – send drafts, outlines, ideas…I love to give feedback on in-progress works!

Instructions:

  1. Select a topic from the list below:

Event Spaces & Society

Renovation & Reuse

Structural Innovation

Politics & War

Integration of Built & Natural Systems

The Sciences & Architecture

Architecture & Societal Growth

Monuments & Public/Civic Space

Cultural and/or Religious Practices Shaping Architecture

  1. Conduct your research (& use the resources available to you in the library…including librarians!).

Keep track of your research so that your bibliography accurately reflects the content of your paper. Your bibliography must consist of at LEAST three texts/scholarly journals (your course textbook does NOT count). Scholarly online resources may be used as supplemental sources. If you are questioning the credibility of a website, it’s probably best to use it as a stepping stone to find another source.

  1. Construct a thesis statement and support it with your well-structured argument.
  2. Come up with your own unique subtitle. For example:

Politics & War: socio-political reflection in the construction details of ancient citadels

  1. Conclude your paper with a reflection on how this information shapes the study and practice of architecture today.
  2. Format your paper per the template provided (to be posted at a later date). Four FULL pages on content are required.
  3. Select four images (or sketch your own) that reflect the narrative timeline of your paper. Each image should be properly cited. Write a 100 +- word description of how each image (400 words total) ties into the overall structure of your paper. Follow template provided (to be posted at a later date).

Other notes:

  • MLA format, see references below
  • Reputable websites may be used as supplementary sources
  • Wikipedia is NOT a scholarly source and should not be in your works cited – however, it may be used to discover appropriate sources
