Paper details
This short paper assignment (275 words minimum) asks you to select a threesome of objects from the Art of the (Indigenous) Americas, the Art of Pacific Cultures and the Art of Traditional and Contemporary Africa. Each row in the table below defines three choices that have notable similarities and interesting contrasts, due to the type of object, their cultural functions, the material with which they were made, and so on.
In evaluating your papers look for brief but accurate descriptions of the objects; perceptive remarks on notable aesthetic elements; and a comment or two about the similarities and differences of cultural function. As has been noted several times in several places in this course, the art under consideration here (with a few notable exceptions) was not produced for installation in museums. It was to be appreciated in other social settings. The information you need should be in the textbook, and there should be no need to do any outside research.
