Completing Article Reviews
Students who choose the option to review articles must submit a review of a research article related to a chapter of the textbook.
These reports must be acceptable in content, which must be drawn from a journal (not a magazine or other source), must be research or theory based, and must relate to the topic of psychology AND the topic of a textbook chapter. The article must be at least 2,000 words long, and your review must be at least 400 words (which is about 2 pages, typed, doublespaced). Research articles in all technical fields are written at a high level, which means that some are difficult for students to understand. You should take care to choose articles that you understand well enough so that you can not only write a summary but also answer any questions that I choose to ask you concerning the article.
If you are not familiar with the databases available through the McNeese library, this assignment will be a good opportunity to enhance your technological literacy by learning how to access material in these databases to find appropriate articles. I have placed a description of accessing the library databases on Moodle, a template to guide you to the correct format for your reviews, and even a rough example as guide in general format. If you need additional help, stop by my office during office hours so that I can help you.
Your reports must be written in APA format, including correct reference format. For each of the reports that you do, provide the citation in correct APA format (which may involve making changes to the format that you see in the articles that you retrieve from the databases). The Purdue Owl http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/provides good tutorials on format for references (but you need to follow the tutorial EXACTLY; every comma and every period are important). You must also include a summary of the research procedure and findings, and your interpretation of how this research fits into, supplements, or contradicts existing research on this topic reported in our text. The sample template will guide you to this organization.
Please refer to Academic Integrity policy and the definitions of cheating and plagiarism as well as the penalties for these offenses. In addition, please study the document about plagiarism, which is posted in Moodle.
This assignment will be graded using the PSYC Dept. Writing Rubric which is posted on Moodle. It would benefit you to review this document prior to attempting the assignment. Also, as you will be handing in a physical copy of this assignment rather than an electronic copy, you MUST print, complete, and staple a copy of the rubric to the back of the assignment. If you fail to include the rubric with your assignment, or fail to fill out the necessary portions of the rubric, the grade that you receive on the assignment will be affected.
Lastly, it may be a good idea to get this assignment started earlier than the night before it is due just to make sure that you can successfully make use the database and adequately understand the assignment. As always, if you have any questions or need any help, stop by during my office hours.
