Unit 2: Definition Argument—A is/is not B
The definition argument that you write will 1) make a claim that a particular is or is not a member of a category, and 2) support your claim with grounds (evidence about the particular) and a warrant (evidence about the category). As with the evaluation argument paper, the critical component of this assignment will be your claim (which will appear in your title) and how you use evidence to support the grounds and warrants of that claim.

Topic: The topic of your definition paper is open, but the category (B) must be a noun. In addition, you need to email your topic to me (jacotner@stcloudstate.edu) by Friday, 5 Oct so that I can ensure your topic is indeed a definition argument before to get too far into it.

Claim: The claim of your paper must make a statement of equality or non-equality between a particular and a category. As with any argument, ensure that your claim has exigency—compelling to an audience.

Rhetorical Situation: The rhetorical situation is less crucial in this assignment than it was in the evaluation assignment, but whenever you write anything of substance (and usually not of substance as well) you should consider your audience.

Warrants: The warrants (evidence about the category) for your claim will provide evidence to support your position on what constitutes your definition claim. When you say something belongs/doesn’t belong to a category, you must clearly define characteristics of a member of that category.

Grounds: The grounds (evidence about the particular) that you will use to support your claim can be researched or your own thoughts but must build a clear case for your claim. Your grounds must specifically address the warrant that you define as well.

Rebuttal: A rebuttal that argues an opposing position should be supplied, as there are always differing opinions on every topic and claim. This counter position should be considered in earnest, and then replied to in a Counterargument that (largely) negates the rebuttal.

Technical Parameters: The evaluation paper must be at least three (3) pages long with one-inch square margins, 12-point font, double-spaced, title and student name at top (12-point font); I know the class designation and my name, so no need to include them.

Your claim must be stated clearly in the introduction and conclusion paragraphs, and you should also state your grounds and warrants in them as well. You must include three warrants to define your category and three grounds to tie your particular to that category, and therefore support your claim.
