artificial photosynthesis

Biology is an interdisciplinary science – it connects to many other topics and subjects. It is also conducted in a societal context – there is an important relationship between biology and society. The objective of this project is for you to explore those aspects of biology. For this project, you will be making a connection between a topic we learned about in class and another discipline or aspect of society. You may work on your own or in a small group (up to 3 people – check with me if you want to have 4). You will be presenting your project at the end of the class. This project will be graded on several areas:

  • Summary of the biology: you need to accurately and completely summarize the biology behind your project, at least to the level of detail that we went into in class. If this requires an additional paper or powerpoint that you also turn in to get to this level of detail, you are responsible for that as well.
  • Connection: you will need to explicitly describe how your project illustrates the connection between biology and another discipline or society. This means you must actually talk about the connection between your subjects.
  • Reference: you will need to identify a credible reference that can be used as a background source for your project. This source can be used as background for the biology or for the other discipline (for example, if you are writing an elementary school lesson plan, you could reference a resource on writing a good lesson plan). You may use information from the class and from the textbook, but you must find an additional reference.
  • Professional final product that will be turned in
  • Presentation

Some examples of potential Connections Projects are given below:

    • Biology and the arts:
      • sculpt a model (of a cell, of an enzyme)
      • do an interpretive dance of an enzyme reaction
      • write and perform a song or a poem
  • act out a biological process
  • make a “college level” cell cake (this is harder than you think)
    • Biology and math:
      • present the difference in size between a virus and a human cell
      • research the kinetics (rate) of an enzyme reaction
    • Biology and language arts:
      • write a research paper on artificial photosynthesis
    • Biology and sports:
      • design and carry out an experiment that has something to do with sports (remember the jumping experiment? Like that, only more interesting)
      • Research the link between cellular respiration and athletic activity
    • Biology and children:
  • Write a children’s book describing parts of the cell
  • Write a lesson plan teaching an aspect of biology to elementary school kids
  • Biology and health:
    • Describe how your diabetes causes a defect in homeostasis
    • Explain what part of the cell malfunctions in Tay Sachs disease and how this leads to disease symptoms

Connections Project Grading Rubric – 55 points total

  5 points 3 points 1 point
Biology Topic Summary

X 3 (15 points)

A thorough, correct summary of the biological topic is given. There is enough information to acquaint an average person with the important aspects of the topic. The level of detail is similar to that discussed in class. The topic is briefly summarized. Someone who already understood the topic would probably know what was going on. There may be minor factual errors. The level of detail is much less than that discussed in class. The topic is barely summarized or the summary contains major factual errors.
Connection

X 3 (15 points)

It is obvious and explicitly stated how this project connects an aspect of what we talked about in class to another discipline or to society. It is obvious, but you do not explicitly state how this project connects an aspect of what we talked about in class to another discipline or to society. Your project doesn’t seem to connect biology to another discipline or to society.
References

One good credible source relating to the biological topic or other discipline is correctly cited as background information. The information from the sources is correctly and completely summarized are used as background for the project. One or more articles are not good, credible sources OR are only incompletely summarized. Very little summary provided OR article(s) do not appear to relate to the topic at all.
Professionalism

X 2 (10 points)

A professional final product (in whatever form) is presented. No typos or other mistakes. A college-level project. The final product is pretty good, but definitely has some flaws. There are major problems with the project. It is not done at a college-level.
Presentation

X 2 (10 points)

The presentation of the project was awesome. Couldn’t have been better. Presenter(s) had good eye contact, projected voice, were practiced, could answer any questions. The presentation was just average. There were some major issues with the presentation.
