SCI 105 Term Project (25% of total grade)
This class is a survey of the entire Universe in one semester. We started small and in the next few weeks will study distant galaxies and the overall structure and beginning of the universe. You all come to this course with diverse talents and interests, and we want the term project to connect to those talents. you will produce something that synthesizes what you have learned this semester and integrates it with your talents and interests. This project is intended to help you make connections between multiple topics we have covered throughout the course and your own life.

Our Term Projects should be connected to your major or another important interest, hobby, or passion in your life. Your project will include a presentation to the class and a written report detailing the scientific topics examined. These projects should be undertaken through the semester and be fun!
Each individual or group should:
– write a group paper explaining the science (astronomy) behind the project, how it is expressed through the project, and how it connects to the semester as a whole.
– plan and prepare a project, produce your physical end
-product – present your project to the class
you are responsible for writing enough to explain the science behind your project. If your content does not seem like enough to fill these page requirements, you need to expand your content. You may choose whether to explain how your project reflects the science and how it relates to your interests/major. Grade percentages are included for each option. Be sure to include page numbers.

The projects themselves vary drastically, so it is difficult to assign a breakdown of grades. Generally, they will all be graded on:

• Accuracy of information presented – Information you present should be accurate both in science content and in terms of other facts. Note that artistic liberties should not be taken if they contradict fact.

• Inspiration from astronomy – Your project should obviously tie into or be inspired by a topic in astronomy.

• Craftsmanship – The quality of your project is important. Depending on the project this will include quality of writing and/or physical production and/or demonstration, etc.

• Amount of effort – The amount of work that goes into your project needs to reflect the importance of this project to your grade and the number of people in your group.

Presentation :

to the class: Presentations will be Monday and Wednesday, April 24 and April 26. In addition to my opinion, students will comment on all presentations/projects, which I will consider while grading. Each individual or group will present their project and a summary of the science behind it as a powerpoint/keynote/etc. If your project is interactive (like a game), your presentation should include a demonstration. At a minimum, each individual or group member will give 5 minutes of presentation. More is certainly allowed, particularly if you want to include a demo or activity.
