Australian Cinema Research Essay: Film critique

Objective: The learning objective of this assessment is to research and write a film critique. Your critique should demonstrate critical research and analysis, drawing upon wide reading from a variety of credible sources to include: peer-reviewed journals, articles, reviews, books, online publications and films.

Task: Choose a question from the list and write an essay focussing on two of the set films in the unit. Your essay should demonstrate critical research and analysis. The essay must include a theoretical framework to back up your arguement.

Question: Critically examine Australian film representations of race (Aboriginal Australia & white australia).

1. Samson and Delilah (2009)
2. The Sapphires (2012)

The research essay will be assessed in terms of the following:

Argument and analysis –
Your arguments should be clearly articulated and well-supported.
They should demonstrate critical thinking, understanding, analysis, evaluation, consistency, originality and academic rigour. You should reflect an understanding of how your claims relate to those of critics, theorists and film makers.

Reading and research –
You should demonstrate wide reading and research using appropriate academic texts from a variety of sources to include: peer-reviewed journals, articles, reviews, books, online publications, and films. Your critique should be appropriately referenced and feature a comprehensive bibliography.

Writing and structure –
Your writing should be clear, concise and coherent in keeping with the conventions of academic prose. Your critique should demonstrate logical, persuasive and well-conceived arguments. There should be a clear introduction, body and conclusion. Your critique will also be assessed in terms of accurate punctuation, spelling, and grammar. The critique layout should be clear and the typing double-spaced.
