authors’ perceptions of their own cultures and national heritages. All people and cultures view the world through their own lenses. Sadly, race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. may all have an effect on the way people are treated—or the way they believe they are being treated—at some point in their lives. Therefore, your heritage or culture can have an extraordinary impact on your perception of the world. For this Extra Credit Essay, you will have to examine your own background. Do you consider yourself an American, Korean, or other single nationality, or do you consider yourself to be of a particular nationality type (Italian American, for example)? Perhaps you identify more with a group: parents, Catholics, service members, etc. What are the most important aspects of your background? In other words, how does your background influence your reading of this literature? This is a personal literary analysis essay in which it is permissible to use first person (but not second person) pronouns. All other formal writing conventions must be followed.

Writing Suggestion: First, define your background in the introduction and tie it to the reading. For the body of the essay, you should demonstrate, using specific examples from the text, how your background influenced your interpretation of the piece. How can you relate to it? What makes your interpretation particular to your life’s experiences?

Length Requirement: Essays must be between 500-700 words—no longer or shorter.

Citation Requirements: The purpose of this assignment is to make a connection between your life (real life) and literature, so you must include passages from the reading with proper MLA in-text citations. No Works Cited page is required. If you fail to make connections with the text and leave out quotes and/or citations, your essay will be incomplete.

Submission Requirements: Your essay should be formatted as an MLA style essay. English 101 was a prerequisite for this course. If you don’t know how to format an essay in MLA style, you need to find out quickly. Your essay must be attached to the dropbox as a Word Document (Doc or DocX), RTF, or PDF file. If you submit your document in any other format, it will not be graded.

Possible Extra Credit Points: This extra credit assignment is worth up to 20 extra credit points and will be graded with the expectation that you passed English 101 and understand how to use Standard American English and how to conform to the writing standards of CSN’s English Department, specifically to the writing standards of this English Professor.

Eligibility Requirements: You cannot pass this course based on extra credit. The purpose of this assignment is to help students who have worked diligently, but may have misunderstood an assignment or missed a due date earlier in the semester. ONLY STUDENTS WHOSE FINAL GRADES ARE 70% OR HIGHER ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY. THAT’S A FINAL SCORE OF C-, BEFORE THE ESSAY. If you’re unsure of your final score and still wish to attempt this assignment, I will only add the extra credit to your grade if your final (pre-extra credit) grade is at least 70%.
