The Bible, New Testament Paper

Paper:

“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asks the disciples this Christological question, and in many ways, everyone who encounters Christianity needs to answer it as well. You will discuss this question from a variety of perspectives.

Part 1: Please choose one of the “synoptic Gospels” (Matthew, Mark, or Luke) and answer the above question from the perspective of your chosen Gospel author. For example, if you choose Matthew, how does Matthew answer the question of who is Jesus?

Part 2: Contrast your chosen synoptic Gospel with the Gospel of John. You will need to discuss the question from John’s perspective and compare his thoughts with your synoptic Gospel author’s perspective.

Part 3: Using one of the New Testament’s letters, compare the letter’s understanding of who Jesus was with your chosen synoptic Gospel. You may use one of the letters we have studied or choose one that we have not.

Part 4: Finally, this is a two-part question.

Part 1: Think of your perspective regarding this question. Do you agree or disagree with any of the perspectives you have already written on?

Part 2: To further your thinking, reflect on how the answer to this question impacts humanity and how we value the human person. Choose a specific situation in today’s world concerning human beings (for example, euthanasia) and analyze that situation from two of the perspectives above (your chosen synoptic Gospel, John’s Gospel, and your chosen letter). For example, how would Paul in the Letter to the Romans relate to and respond to euthanasia?

Guidelines for Christological Analysis

Purpose

The purpose of doing Christological analysis is to draw attention to major and minor differences and similarities in comparable materials (sayings & stories) and perspectives among the authors of the four Gospels and the epistles regarding the question: Who is Jesus?

The Paper

I suggest that you organize your observations by writing an outline of each of the four sections of your paper, and then a rough draft (1000–1250 words). Let the rough draft sit for a few hours or days, and then rewrite it, aiming to be clear and concise. Proofread your paper, and document all use of secondary literature. Refer to pertinent biblical passages by citing the name of the Gospel, chapter, and verse(s) (e.g., Mark 8:30–31). Review the grading rubric (on Brightspace) for this assignment to be sure your essay addresses all the required topics. Re-write your paper so it expresses clearly and succinctly your analysis.

Resources

For further information regarding the passage(s) you are analyzing it can be helpful to consult various Bible dictionaries and commentaries in the Busse Library. You need to consult, use and cite four (4) resources from reputable, contemporary, and classical Biblical scholars in your paper.
