Billing and Coding

For the assigned case studies, students must thoroughly review the medical record and determine the appropriate coding and sequencing of all diagnoses and procedures. You will also utilize the encoder software to determine the correct MS-DRG and weight. For each case, you will need to answer the following questions.

1. Admit diagnosis code number (1 only)
2. Discharge status (list of options available in doc sharing)
3. Principal diagnosis code number (1 only) with POA indicator
4. Secondary diagnoses codes with POA indicators (up to 18)
5. Principal procedure code (1 only)
6. Secondary procedure codes (up to 5)
7. MS-DRG (obtained from by using the DRG Finder in side 3M)
8. Relative weight (calculated with the MS-DRG by 3M)
9. Is there an opportunity for physician query? If so, why?
