Biochemical Research paper

Research Paper

Each student is to submit a research paper as part of their final grade. This research paper is to reflect an individual rather than a group effort. Evidence of collaboration on research papers will result in loss of points. The paper is to be a minimum of twelve pages, typewritten, double spaced. It is to contain a minimum of twelve references, at least six of which need be journal articles. Note that twelve pages and twelve references is the minimum. Minimum work earns “C” grade. Those desiring higher grades should think in terms of exceeding the minimum. A good starting point for references is the NIH-sponsored “Entrez-Pubmed” website. Once the references are found, they may be obtained through UAPB Library, UAPB Interlibrary Loan or UAMS Library.

The UAPB Library now has a good number of Biochemical journals online. These may be accessed using the Library link in the UAPB homepage.

*****The paper must be on a biochemistry related topic and contain biochemical information. The best choice of a topic is one covered in the course material. Papers on medical conditions and diseases are acceptable providing they focus on the biochemical causes or processes involved in the disease or condition.

Discussion of biochemical pathways, chemical reactions or protein conformations should be accompanied by the appropriate illustrations. Chemical structures of small molecules should be shown.

The paper may be related to research work done by the student during a summer internship or an on-campus research project. However, it should not focus mainly on the student’s personal data. Rather, it should focus on the background and rationale behind the project.

****The paper is to be written in APA style. All pertinent information is to be referenced to the bibliography. Direct quotes from the literature are to be surrounded by quotation marks and a literature reference. All other information is to be paraphrased using the student’s own wording, but still using literature references to indicate where they obtained the material. It is expected that the student communicate to the instructor by means of this paper that he or she understands the material they are writing and are not simply copying sections of material from various texts.

Some criteria used in grading this paper are:

Organization – is the paper well organized?

Understanding – does the paper lead the one reading it to believe that the student understands the material?

Appropriateness of Topic – Does the topic relate to material learned in this course?

Use of References – Is every section of the text in which the concepts were obtained from a book or journal article marked with a proper reference?

Use of Illustrations – Are references to data, chemical reactions, biochemical pathways and similar features accompanied by an appropriate illustration?

Length of Paper – Is the paper at least 12 pages?

Number of References – Are there at least 12 references, at least 6 being journal articles?
