The Final Project:

You are strongly encouraged to choose a topic that holds the most interest for you, whether personally or professionally. You may use one of the following two approaches:

1. Prepare a research paper on a neurobiology topic.

In order to prepare a good final paper you will need to present your thesis statement as part of the introduction (the first few paragraphs of the paper). In the ‘body’ of the paper you will provide background information necessary for the reader to understand the topic and the data supporting your thesis; also, you will rebut any data that contradicts your thesis. Finally, you will conclude the paper by summarizing its main points.

For this course your final thesis should be relatively narrow as you must keep your paper to between 2,500 and 3,750 words (at an average of 250 words per page, this is 10 pages. Please note, this word count is text, and it does not include figure legends, the bibliography, title page, etc.).

As part of your final project, you must use a minimum of 10 reliable sources of different types: books, academic journal articles, reputable internet sources, etc. Wikipedia, for example, is NOT to be used as a resource.

As with any college-level paper, you should use proper grammar and spelling. All sources must be cited properly within the text of the paper, following MLA or APA formatopens in a new window.

2. Find and review 3 scientific journal articles: each review must be at least one page long and contain an informative glossary of 3-5 words. This will be your background material.

Design an experiment that would further research on this topic. Your experimental design must include all the following sections: hypothesis, model organism, control, variables, materials, experimental method used; and it must be at least 1-2 double-spaced pages. Since it is a proposed experiment there is no need to include hypothetical results or a conclusion.

An important reminder: for your bibliography, you must choose three challenging research articles on neurobiology from scientific journals and they must be properly citedopens in a new window. Articles of a social, psychological, or political nature will not be acceptable nor will articles from the everyday press.

Be sure to make use of all the resources that your college offers!
