Brenner Project 4 – Examine the Florida Platform
Brenner Project 4
In this project we will examine the Florida Platform You will need to research the geologic his
tory of Florida and generate some sort of project (1-2 page essay, art project, geologic map/dia
gram, etc.) that captures the geologic "essence" of Florida at one point in time or across a length of time of your own choosing.
Visit the following websites to learn more about the geologic history of Florida • Florida Museum of Natural History • UF/IFAS Florida’s Geological History • USGS
A Summary of Findings of the WestCentral Florida Coastal Studies Project Early Geologic History • USGS Geologic Map of Florida (with man cross sections, and
regional maps) • Florida DEP Florida Geological Survey Florida’s Geologic History Once you have completed the reading, complete your project.
Demonstrate a knowledge of the geologic history of Florida through a creative and selfdeter
mined/defined project. Here are some ideas:
• You are an "artistic" type, or you simply love to make visual art (drawing, computer ani
mation, painting, sculpture, etc.): Create a reconstruction of a shallow marine faunal as
semblage that existed on top of the submerged Florida platform 135 million years ago. Submit a photograph or scan. Visual images must be accompanied by a written
statement explaining the work. • You’re a scubaenthusiast: Document a "virtualdive" in an environment (cave, marine, lake) that existed at some point in
Florida’s geologic past. Describe the organisms that you would encounter as well as what the landcape (or marinescape) would look like. Be creative. Write it up in a
maximum of 12 pages and submit. • You are really into Haiku poetry: Write a series of Haiku showing a knowledge of Flor
ida geologic history. • You are a musician: write a song • You’re interested in Florida history: speculate on how the geologic history of Florida has influenced the
cultural/human history of the state.
