Business in the 21st Century

For this week’s assignment, put on your CEO hat and describe a change you want to implement in your company (either the one you work for now or in one you create using your imagination about a firm in an industry you are interested in).

This assignment also has an additional objective, working on your presentation skills. Like it or not, there is a very good chance in the future you will be expected to deliver a formal presentation to your boss, professional colleagues, potential customers, or people in the community. NCU’s School of Business faculty recently met with members of our Professional Advisor Committee who represent companies like Walmart, HP, Quicken Loans, and others. When they were asked what skills seemed to be missing in college graduates they were looking to hire, they frequently mentioned inter-personal communication skills. They also specifically mentioned the need to make effective presentations. This week, you will prepare a PowerPoint presentation to address your senior staff, directors, managers, and supervisors. Include the following:

  • Provide a brief overview of the change that you want to be implemented and the reason for the change. In order for your organization to consider designing a change strategy, your change should be one that you believe will face significant resistance from people within the organization, often because it threatens the existing organizational culture. An example of a change that might be appropriate is a major change in how an organization is organized, a significant technological change introduced into the work process, or a significant change in a firm’s compensation systems. Generally, the more detail you offer about the change, the easier the rest of the assignment is to complete in an effective way.
  • Compare Kotter’s and Lewin’s recommended change models. What are their similarities and what are their differences?
  • Identify two other change models, and then explain the processes.
  • Choose one (or more) of the four models, and then defend the model(s) choice.
  • Discuss in some detail your change strategy planning process for using the model(s). This is an excellent place to use elements you found in this week’s assigned readings, especially the book chapters in Mastering the Challenges of Leading Change.

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as speaker notes for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.

The resource section of this assignment includes links to extensive resources available from the NCU library on change management and the specific models discussed in the assignment. Support your presentation with the resources provided and at least three other resources.

Length: 12-15 slides, (with a separate reference slide)

References: Include a minimum of four (4) scholarly resources in addition to the one provided in the resources section of this assignment.

Listed below are some tips for your slide presentation.

  1. Begin your presentation with a title slide that includes your name. (Do not include the NCU cover sheet for your PowerPoint presentation.)
  2. Use plenty of white space on the slides.
  3. Provide a few appropriate graphics to break up the text.
  4. Use six bullets per slide or less.
  5. Use Times New Roman, 28 or 32-point font.
  6. Use the speaker’s notes area to include the information you want to share with your audience. The speaker’s notes must be coordinated with the information on the slides. Be sure to provide citations for your sources. Speaker’s Notes Length: 150-200 words for each slide
  7. Be creative. You can add audio to the presentation if you choose to do so; however, it is not required.
  8. Include references on your final slide(s).
