Business Ethics

Using the business description given, design the policies, rules and procedures for this ideal business entity.  These policies must touch upon eight areas that were covered in the class.  They are:

[1]       mission and vision statement [ch 4.]

[2]       ethical workplace policies [ch. 1 and 4

[3]       economic, social and environmental sustainability policies [ch.3  and 10]

[4]       due process, participation, health, safety and privacy rights [ch. 6]

[5]       product liability and pricing policies [ch. 8]

[6]       sales and advertising policies [ch. 9]

[7]       discrimination, equal opportunity and affirmative action policies [ch. 11]

[8]       international business transaction policies [ch. 12]

If you are unfamiliar with the main points of these areas, check back in the chapters covering each.

Be creative!  Come up with a name and logo for your company.  Imagine yourself as the owner or CEO of the business and set the policies that determine the ethical direction and expectations for the business and its employees.  In your policy statements try to answer the question: what will be my company’s hiring policies, environmental responsibilities, international business practices, product liability, advertising and marketing policies, expectations of ethical behavior in the workplace, and procedures to prevent or respond to harassment claims?

Each policy area should be tailored to the type of business or company described for you.  You may have to do some research on the internet about your company or industry type. For example, if your company operated a nuclear power plant, there would be unique policies on employee health and safety and environmental policies related to waste disposal.  Spend at least one full paragraph on each policy area.  State policies about which behaviors are acceptable and which are not, what rights are recognized, or what practices/goals the business seeks.  You can even format it as a brochure or employee manual.

additional  instructions:

The online final project is to create a fictional business based on the assigned description and to write a minimum 8-paragraph set of ethical guidelines for your company.  Pretend you are the owner, founder or CEO of this business and you will create a name and logo for the business.

Based on the topics in the chapters from the DesJardins book, come up with guidelines for 8 policy areas that are mentioned in the format sheet.  This make take some research on the type of business in order to tailor the policies for your particular business.  For example, if your business is a mining company, your employee safety policies are going to be different from the safety policies for a bagel shop.

Be creative.  You are explaining the ethical policies for your business.  If you wish you can even develop your policies as a trifold brochure or an employee manual.
