Cell and Molecular Bio

Cell and Molecular Bio

For this assignment you will unleash your inner creativity to help explain a key concept from the course material in a new way. In addition to helping you to think about the concepts more deeply these products will also aid your fellow students’ understanding by helping them to see the concepts from a different perspective.

Some ideas include:

A skit/play – either where the concept is being discussed or even where molecules are the actors (here is an example A Transformation Tale.docxPreview the documentView in a new window)

A song or poem

A movie or animation – can be made through programs such as iMovie (Apple) or Movie Maker (Windows), Adobe Flash or KoolMoves 7.0 for animations (free limited trial membership), or any of a variety of other programs online

Wiki page – providing explanation (in own words) suitable for general public (including people who haven’t taken this class) with figures (and figure legends), movie/animations, and pointing out connections (with links) to relevant public interest articles or websites. Go to https://wikispaces.com/join/JHM4MF4 and join the BIO214-Sp16 wikispace (may need JHM4MF4 code). Create a new page and post the link and title of the wiki.

Create an infographic, similar to wikipage. http://piktochart.com/

Create a thorough concept map (mind map) – using software such as Bubbl.us (https://bubbl.us/ (Links to an external site.)). Remember to clarify connections.

Worksheet/Assignment – Create your own in-class or take home activity on a concept that could be assigned to a class such as BIO214 or even a high school level course. Include an answer key and instructions for teachers explaining what the activity is about.

assignment will be graded based on accuracy and thoroughness in explaining concept as well as the creativity and originality of explanation. Also note that not all the topics below can be effectively explained using any of the suggested ideas above, for instance some topics would benefit from images which are not possible in concept maps.

Concepts for Chapters 15-17

choose one chapter only for this assignment!!!

Chapter 15

Compare and Contrast transport of proteins in mitochondria and ER

Describe the process of vesicle formation and docking/fusion

Describe the location of translation and pathways of trafficking for proteins targeted to mitochondria, ER, nucleus, and extracellular matrix (i.e. secreted protein)

Chapter 16

Describe the types and functions of the three primary components of a signaling pathway: Extracellular signal molecules (two types), Receptors (cell surface and intracellular), and intracellular signal molecules.

Explain how a single signaling pathway can rapidly communicate a signal throughout the whole cell and alter multiple cellular functions.

Compare and contrast the general features of signal transduction (activation of the first intracellular signal molecules) in GPCR and RTK signaling pathways.

Chapter 17

Compare and contrast the three types of cytoskeletal filaments in terms of their monomers, formation and function

Describe the arrangement of microtubules in cilia and flagella and how a bending motion is produced by dynein motors

Explain the steps involved in muscle contraction, including a description of proteins and structures involved
