Character, Desire, and Conflict

As Sikov notes, “narrative films are often about an individual character in search or pursuit of a goal” (97).  For this assignment, explain how Dorothy Gale (The Wizard of Oz), Benjamin Braddock (The Graduate), Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver), J.J. Gittes (Chinatown), and the unnamed narrator of Fight Club all share a similar quality as goal-driven protagonists who begin their respective narratives “lost” in some way.  To this end, explain how the antagonist for each character is society itself.
