How would you characterize the overall design? In other words, how might you describe the general approach you are proposing to another doctoral student? • If you are proposing a multivariate design, how would you explain what that means in your own words? • Who is the population? If you intend to sample, how will you sample? • What is the dependent variable (or variables)? What are the independent variables of interest? • What are the data sources for your study? If you have more than one data source, how do they fit together? How will you collect data? • What analyses do you plan to conduct? Instead of naming tests, please describe the analyses in terms of the comparisons, associations, or explanations that you seek to do. For example, “the study seeks to examine potential differences between men and women’s grade point average.” • What evidence will you have that speaks to validity and reliability?

1) Below I have included the major comments for the qualitative exam. As I think you’ll see, the major critiques involve the way that the qualitative response was conceived and written much more like a qualitative study.

•Language is clearly quantitative
•Talks about using major data sets.
•This is a not a good example of proficiency with qualitative research.
•Student’s purpose statement is unclear and RQ’s do not align with the purpose statement.
•RQs are quantitative: influence, impact, predictor, etc.
•Discusses survey data; secondary data
•Whole section on theoretical framework but no framework is explained. Interpretive perspective theoretical framework – not clear what this means.
•Language is clearly quantitative and design and analysis mismatched.
