Common causes of project failure

In January 2003 the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC, now part of the Cabinet Office) and the National Audit Office (NAO) published a list of Common Causes of Project Failure. The intention was to improve delivery of IT-enabled programmes/projects and this was later extended to cover all acquisition-based programmes/projects (Cabinet Office, 2012). It is now mandatory for senior management on all such projects to satisfy themselves that projects do not suffer from any of these eight common causes of failure and to sign a formal record accordingly.

Conduct a critical analysis of your own organization’s project management practices against these eight causes of project failure and make recommendations for reducing the risk of projects failing in your organization in the future.

Your paper must not exceed 3000 words.

Relevant concepts from this module should be identified and applied in support of your critical analysis and in developing recommendations for improvement.

You should clearly describe your role in the organization, and the scope of your analysis.
