Communication 2: Summer 2016 Research Paper/Essay #4 Due: August 4th, Thursday by 11:59 pm For Essay 4, you have the opportunity to write on any story, poem, or play we have covered in class. You will research your project and find scholarly articles to defend your argument. Length: 4 to 7 pages. The 4-7 page length does not include the works cited page. The works cited page is a separate page after the last page of your paper, but it is connected to your essay. So, just hit enter when you come to the last page of your paper, then title it Works Cited and list the outside sources (and the story’s source), which is your Bedford textbook. List the entries alphabetically. Do not upload your works cited page as a separate file. A minimum of two outside sources is required. Please note: Your textbooks for this class are not outside sources. For an A paper, you need to use articles from the EFSC library databases as your outside sources. If you insist on going to the Web to look for articles, I suggest you stay away from .coms! Sometimes, .edu sites have decent articles. Sometimes, a .org will have scholarly articles. I do not consider Wikipedia, Helpme.com, or Sparknotes to be scholarly sources! Use articles in the literary databases available to you through the EFSC library. The articles on literary criticism have been peer-reviewed. Click on the Library link in Course Resources in Lessons. Then, click on Databases. Log in. JSTOR and Literature Online are two popular databases to search under. From there, use the keyword search to find articles. If you have trouble accessing the library and/or database, contact me immediately! Whatever source you decide to use, you must use correct MLA format and in-text citations. MLA format includes a works cited page. I suggest you read the articles about your chosen story, poem, or play first, and then put your tentative works cited page together. You can always go back later and change or delete what you don’t need. Then, decide on your thesis statement and write your paper. You may choose to side with the arguments made from your research or add to their arguments by discussing a point that your research leaves out. Either way, you must support your claims with in-text citations from both your primary source (the piece of literature) and your secondary sources, the database articles. This paper is like your previous essays, only you are adding a few more sources to support your argument. For help with writing literature research papers, please turn to A Writer’s Reference, and go to the L tab. Also, read the student essays I have posted in this week’s Module. • Contact me if you have questions about the assignment. The best way is through CANVAS email.
