Comparative Essay – SNHU FAS201 – Theme- Akhenaten’s Worship of/Devotion to Aten

1ST TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Write your INTRODUCTORY paragraph. Feel free to use your

Milestone 1 submission as your introductory paragraph, but be sure to address any

feedback your instructor provided in response to that submission.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed (write at least 2 or 3 sentences for

each bullet point):

• For each work, identify the author/artist, the name or title of the work, the date, the cultural

origin or period of creation, and the current location or physical setting.

• What is your main argument/idea about the relationship between your selected works and

their shared theme?

2nd TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Write 1-3 CONTEXT paragraph(s).

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed (write at least 3 or 4 sentences for

each bullet point):

• How did cultural traditions and ideologies influence/shape the two works you have

selected? Use examples to support your response.

3rd TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Write 2-4 COMPARISON/CONTRAST paragraphs.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed (write at least 2 or 3 sentences for

each bullet point):

• In what similar ways do your selected artist and author approach the shared theme found

in their respective works? Provide specific examples to support your response.

• In what different ways do your selected artist and author approach the shared theme

found in their respective works? Provide specific examples to support your response.

• How does each work express its specific cultural and historical setting? Provide specific

examples to support your response.

• How have the similarities and differences you identified come to represent the culture in

which these works were created? Provide specific examples to support your response.

.

Please keep in mind that the MODERN portions of your Milestone should be about 1/3 of

your total paper. The MODERN portions of your paper has SIX (6) DIFFERENT

CATEGORIES of information that must be addressed to satisfy the Rubric

requirements. Here’s some additional explanation to help clarify these very subtle and nuanced

categories of “MODERN INFLUENCE.” I recommend writing a sentence or two for each

item:

4th TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Write 1-3 paragraphs discussing how your selected

works influence a MODERN expression of the THEME they share. Be sure to consider

how each work may continue TO INFLUENCE OR DEFINE CONTEMPORARY

CULTURE. What impacts or influence have your two selected works had on a modern or

contemporary expression of the identified shared theme? How has each work continued

to influence or define contemporary culture?

Consider whether there are any MODERN events, ideas, or artworks that echo the THEME

of the works you selected.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

• The “EXPRESS” section of your paper must address how MODERN cultural expressions (such

as MODERN artworks or literature) are INFLUENCED by the shared THEME of your two ancient

works. What is an EXAMPLE of a MODERN artwork or literature that COMMUNICATE the

shared THEME of your two ancient works?

• The “DEFINE” section of your paper is NOT about the two works themselves, but about their

CREATORS. How do the ARTIST and the AUTHOR of your ancient works continue to impact our

MODERN culture? (For ancient works with unknown artists/authors, even more imagination and

creativity will be needed to satisfy this category’s requirement.) Be sure to provide MODERN

EXAMPLES showing the continuing influence of the ancient artist and author in our MODERN

world to clarify this category.

• The “LEARN” section of your paper is about what ancient works can TEACH us today. What

LESSONS can we learn from the ancient ARTWORK that you chose? What can the ancient work

of LITERATURE that you chose teach us about our MODERN lives today? Be sure to provide

MODERN EXAMPLES that demonstrate what the ancient works you chose can teach us about

our lives TODAY.

• The “ECHO” section of your paper must address how MODERN EVENTS or IDEALS reflect the

shared THEME of your two ancient works. What are some MODERN EXAMPLES of

contemporary EVENTS that reflect the shared THEME that you have identified? Be sure to

EXPLAIN your MODERN EXAMPLES.

5th TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Consider whether the works you’ve selected have come to be

REPRESENTATIVE OF THE IDENTIFIED THEME. Discuss any PARALLELS between the

cultural and historical setting in which the works were produced and MODERN

culture. How has EACH work come to represent their common THEME? What are some

SIMILARITIES between the cultural/historical setting of the works and modern culture

today?

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

• The “ARCHETYPES” section of your paper must address how the shared THEME of your ancient

works continues to be a standard today. An “ARCHETYPE” is a recurrent symbol or motif

that continues throughout history and across cultures. Provide some EXAMPLES of how

your ancient works and their shared THEME continue to be EMULATED and IMITATED in our

MODERN world today.

• The “PARALLELS” section of your paper is about the ways in which the ancient CULTURE in

which your two ancient works were created is like our MODERN CULTURE today. What does our

MODERN world have IN COMMON with the ANCIENT world that produced your two chosen

works? As with the all the other 5 MODERN CATEGORIES, the easiest and most efficient way to

approach this Rubric category will be to provide and EXPLAIN at least one MODRN EXAMPLE.

• As you can see, in order to cover all SIX (6) Rubric categories as required, the MODERN

portion of your paper will be the longest and most in-depth part of your paper: the

MODERN section should be just over about 1/3 of your total paper (6 out of 15 sections =

OVER 1/3)!

(NOTE: I know this is a challenge since this requires you to “think outside the box” and to apply

course content to real life experiences, but it’s also the most fun part of the Term Paper to

write! 🙂

.

6th TEXTBOX DIRECTIONS: Write a REFERENCE LIST of your RESEARCH SOURCES in

MLA format. At least FOUR (4) properly-cited sources are required: NO WIKIPEDIA!

Try these Citation machines which making citing sources so much EASIER (I use them all the time

myself!):

• For citing websites: http://www.citationmachine.net/mla/cite-a-website

• For citing books in print: http://www.citationmachine.net/mla/cite-a-book

• For citing other things (TV shows, advertisements, the Bible, and

more): http://www.citationmachine.net/mla/cite-a-other

When you finish filling in all the TEXTBOXES, you will click on a “Download Word Document”

LINK to generate a rough draft of your Milestone. For maximum credit, be sure to edit, proofread,

and format the document before submitting it to your instructor. Save your document and prepare

to submit it as directed through Blackboard.

HELPFUL HINT: To avoid losing any of your work due to session time-out or computer glitches,

type everything in a document on your computer to copy and paste into the textboxes.

Finally, to SUBMIT your Milestone in the format required, you will visit “Submit Your

Assignments,” click on “Final Project Milestone 2: Rough Draft,” and upload your paper

as directed.

If you use this guide and follow the directions carefully, you not only will earn an “A” on

your Milestone 2, but you also will have little or no revisions to do for your Final Draft in

Module 7! (The only extra item needed for the Final Draft is your Conclusion.)
