Instructions: Analyze each work of art in the comparison that you chose and described. What does the artist want you to see first and foremost, and how does the artist compose the work to draw your attention there? Are the colors bright or muted? To what purpose? Are brushstrokes or chisel marks visible? What effect does the presence or absence of brushstrokes or chisel-marks create? How big is it? Does size make a difference? Is there much of a sense of depth or space in the painting, or is it flat and with everything on the picture surface? If this is a work of architecture, a building fragment, then there are still matters of materials, color, and size to consider in addition to how this fragment worked in its original context in the building. If the work of art is a book, is it handmade or printed? How about the layout of the book and its pages? What about text, its size, and what role it plays in the book? Are there any pictures or ornament in the book? How do they affect the text?
Do images on the work of art relate to any original function? For example, does the imagery on a coffin or sarcophagus say anything about the deceased or about beliefs about death and the afterlife?
