TERM PAPER TIPS
As you know by now the last paper is a major effort and will require your attention and work…that’s the bad news. The good news is that you will finish the semester with a sound understanding of how to analyze motions pictures of any type, and be able to do so intelligently.
BARE BONES: The bare-bones specs on the paper are: Title page with a brilliant, original title. Length: 5 pages or longer with a minimum of five outside sources listed on a works cited page, following formats you learned in Composition. At least one source must be hardcopy book or magazine.
FOCUS and PROCEDURE:
I. You chose two movies to compare and contrast, one from this course, and one from the from the National Film Registry at:http://www.loc.gov/film/titles.html. Pick one film from that list that you have never seen and rent or buy a copy. The two films can be wildly different – that’s okay. For the first step, all you have to do is choose a movie. WATCH THE MOVIES. THEN, WATCH THEM AGAIN.
II. Make notes on what you think are the explicit meanings of the two movies.
III. Make notes on patterns of techniques under the headings of mise-en-scene elements.
IV. Collect those notes and start a first draft showing how the movies are similar or different in these categories. Show how these elements, in each movie, create the movie’s explicit meaning.
V. Finally, finish the first draft, summarizing their meanings on the last page.
VI. WRITE A SECOND DRAFT. Maybe a third…
VII. Submit the paper.
