1. Craft an essay discussing the impact of the South African mineral revolution. Focus your attention on the economy (domestic and foreign), labor, colonialism, and emerging racial policy. What do you consider to be the most enduring impact of the mineral discovery?

2. “The central question of African rebellions against colonial rule was the new relationship of Africans to the colonial government.” Comment on this assertion by citing evidence from at least four rebellions against colonial rule.

3. Compare and contrast the systems of “direct” and “indirect rule” used by colonial administrations in Africa. Focus your attention on the objectives, methods, impact, and what you consider to be the legacy of such policies. Be sure to use specific examples in your discussion.

4. Select a territory in either British West Africa, or British East Africa, or French West Africa for the response to this question. Craft an essay commenting on the various stages involved in your selected territory on its journey from colony to independence. Focus your attention from the eve of World War II to independence. Be sure to include your informed conclusion about the nature of the independence received.

5. Assume three meetings took place in South Africa in 1910, 1925, 1nd 1937. The participants at the meetings were a Bantu speaking African, British resident in South Africa, Coloured, and an Afrikaner. Establish an agenda for each of the participants. What do you think each participant would have discussed/complained about. Use these deliberations to enlighten us about the political and social structure of South Africa between 1910 and 1939.
