COMPARE AND CONTRAST Two benefits of the gatekeeper model (MCO)
Instructions: Gatekeeper models of MCOs require the patient to obtain a referral from their primary care physician prior to seeking the help of a specialist. Although the gatekeeper model intends to curb the overuse of medical services, it may also have alternative benefits and costs. Illustrate, compare, and contrast the following:
• Two benefits of the gatekeeper model; and
• Two costs or problems generated by the gatekeeper model.
The result of your comparison should be able to address the following question: Who benefits from the use of the gatekeeper MCO system—the physician or patient? Why?
