compare and contrast two issues relating to street gangs as presented

You are to write a three to five-page paper in which you compare and contrast two issues (from those listed below) relating to street gangs as presented in material assigned for this unit. Your discussion must be directly related to the contents of the material assigned in this unit. This paper is worth 40 points,

Below are specific and general requirements for writing and submitting this paper. In addition, the grading scale, on page 3, should also be used as a guide when writing the paper.

SPECIFIC PAPER REQUIREMENTS

Introduction

This part of your paper will be one to two paragraphs in length. The introduction should include some general information that you want to start your paper with as well as the purpose of your paper (also called the thesis statement). The purpose of your paper (thesis statement) will relate to the two issues that you selected to discuss in your paper. These are listed below. The end of your introduction should be a sentence or two that moves the reader from the introduction to the next section of your paper (this is known as a transition).

Select two of the following issues to discuss in your paper:

ë  Power

ë  Reputation of Gang and of the Individual Gang Member

ë  Gang Life

ë  Leaving the Gang

ë  Violence – Inflicting on Others and Injuries Incurred

ë  Guns

ë  Self Preservation / Selfishness

ë  Police – Gang Relations

ë  Women Gang Members

ë  Retaliation / Revenge

ë  Drugs ë Fear

Main section or body of the paper

This is the main portion of your paper and should be about 2 to 4 pages in length. The purpose of this section is to provide information relating to the purpose of your paper (thesis statement). You will discuss each of your selected issues by comparing and contrasting the information in the assigned materials for this unit.

You will want to use headings and transition sentences to separate the different sections of your paper. Remember, you need to connect the issues and ideas you present directly to course material.

Conclusion

This part of your paper will probably be one paragraph in length. You should use this section to summarize the main points of your paper as it relates to the purpose of your paper (thesis statement) presented in your introduction.

References

At the end of the paper, you must include a list of the references you cited in your paper. The reference list does NOT count toward the page number requirement. You must follow APA format for both in-text citations and the reference list.

GENERAL PAPER GUIDELINES

ë  3 to 5 pages in length (NOT including reference page). This means a minimum of three pages, not just one or two lines on Page 3.

ë  Double-spaced; 12-point font; preferably Times New Roman ë One (1) inch margins on top and bottom; sides can be up to 1.25”

ë  All material taken from another author/resource must be cited (if not it is plagiarism and you will lose points).

ë  You do not need to use reference materials other than those from the course; unless you choose to do so. If you do, these, of course, must be cited in the text of your paper and the full citation included in the References.

ë  Do NOT include a cover page. Rather, put your name and date on the first two lines of Page 1 at either the right or left margins. On the next line, center the title of your paper in bold font.

ë  Include a reference list page (does not count toward required page length) on a separate page at the end of the paper. This must be in APA format.

ë  Wikipedia and other similar websites, dictionaries, and textbooks are NOT academic resources at the college level and are not to be used as references in this class.

ë  Indent the first line of each paragraph

ë  Spell out the numbers nine and under; use digits/numerals for numbers 10 and over

ë  If percent follows a number use the percent (%) symbol (example: 50%)

ë  Do not use contractions

ë  Follow APA format for in-text citations, headings, and issues not addressed here

ë  EDIT, EDIT, EDIT – run spell-check, review it, read it out loud, review it again

ë  Put page numbers on the upper right corner

ë  Submit your paper using the turnitin submission link located in the Administrative Segregation Unit on the course website.

ë  EDIT, EDIT, EDIT – run spell-check, review it, read it out loud, review it again
