Paper 2 asks you to compare and contrast two periods of North Carolina history–the era of Reconstruction (1860s-70s) with the Populism, Fusion, and White Supremacy (1890s). As with all short papers, it should be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and in a standard font.
For this assignment, you should also reference two additional scholarly sources (in addition to those assigned in class). These may be books, articles, or reviews. Books should be published by an academic press, such as UNC Press. Articles or reviews should be published in a scholarly journal such as The North Carolina Historical Review, the Journal of Southern History, or the Journal of American History. This Hunter Library page has several useful links to a variety of secondary sources.
Note: you may choose your two secondary sources to focus on either Reconstruction or the 1890s, or one from each.
While it is preferable that your two sources focus on North Carolina, you may opt for a source that examines either era within a national context–as long as there is an emphasis on events in North Carolina.
