comparing two websites

This small project involves evaluating the usability of two websites against 10 heuristics, identifying the design errors in violation of each heuristic on each website, comparing the usability of the two websites, and preparing a heuristics-based usability evaluation report.

Two websites to be evaluated:

10 Usability Heuristics by Jacob Nielsen (1995):

  1. Visibility of system status
  2. Match between system and the real world
  3. User control and freedom
  4. Consistency and standards
  5. Error prevention
  6. Recognition rather than recall
  7. Flexibility and efficiency of use
  8. Aesthetic and minimalist design
  9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
  10. Help and documentation

Instructions

Follow the steps provided below to prepare your Individual Report 4 (IR-4):

  • Step 1. Inspect the design of the two websites listed above for compliance with each of the 10 Usability Heuristics by Jacob Nielsen (1995). How well does each site meet the requirements underlying each heuristic? What are some design errors found on each page in violation of one or more heuristics? Identify 2 or 3 design errors in each category. Follow the steps described below to prepare your IR-4:
  • Step 2. Compare your results relevant to each site. How does the design of one stack against the other with respect to each of the 10 heuristics? Overall, which site would you judge as more usable based on your comparative analysis?
  • Step 3. Summarize your results into your IR-4 in compliance with the Content and Structure Requirements for IR-4 provided below.
  • Step 4. After ensuring the report meets all content and structure requirements, proof-read it for writing clarity, conciseness, professionalism and grammar. Discard any unsolicited or irrelevant information. Consult the Grading Rubric for IR-4 provided below to self-assess the quality of your report before submitting.
