For this discussion we are going to focus on complex diseases including cardiovascular disease using the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database (OMIM). Please take some time to review the FAQ for OMIM: https://omim.org/help/faq which provides some helpful information including an explanation of the numbering/ nomenclature that can help you when selecting monogenic vs complex diseases.Â
Clearly label the parts of the discussion and include a descriptive title for your post:
A) Use OMIM to look up any of the following genes that affect cardiovascular health and explain what the genes do: apolipoprotein E; LDL receptor; apolipoprotein A; angiotensinogen; beta-2 adrenergic receptor; toll-like receptor 4; C-reactive protein. Be sure to put the gene that you selected in the title of your post.
B)Â Is the gene that you selected associated with another disease in addition to cardiovascular disease? If so, what disease and provide a brief description of its role in that disease.
C)Â Select another gene from OMIM that has been associated with a complex disease and provide a brief overview of that gene and its role in that disease.Â
