Part I – The Preparation:

Please read:

– Misa, Chapter 4, and

– Julie Greene, “Spaniards on the Silver Roll: Labor Troubles and Liminality in the Panama Canal Zone, 1904-1914,” International Labor and Working-Class History, No. 66, New Approaches to Global Labor History(Fall, 2004), pp. 78-98, Cambridge University Press; Available in the Course Reserves.

Part II – The Search:

1) Select three keywords from the above materials to search for your new scholarly source.
2) Search for these keywords using the Drexel Library Databases including:

Part III – The Report:
Report on what you have found. Once you have a good scholarly essay or book (you can limit your reading to a chapter in this book), then address the question below:

Discuss: In a 300-500 word essay, discuss how the terms you chose relate to imperialism and technology. For example, you can

A) Use the examples provided in Misa, my lecture, Greene’s essay, and McCullough’s movie to show how a nation’s interests are supported and/or hindered by technology.
And/Or
B) Relate them to how Greene’s analysis of labor on the Panama Canal differs from that portrayed in McCullough’s film A Man, A Plan, A Canal, Panama?

***Make sure to cite Greene by page number (Greene, p. 80), and the film by describing a scene.

All essays much include:

– A list of the three keywords you searched for,
– A discussion of the above prompt,
– A bibliography of all your sources,
– In-text citations to these sources in the format (Author, page #).
