 construction management

The type of project students can choose is wide and varied. The following are a few suggestions: • A low rise steel framed industrial/warehouse/light commercial building where the structural system is a steel frame (a preferred option in terms of scale and learning outcome) • A steel framed system within a mixed form of construction • High rise or multi-storey building where steel frame is used or where there is significant application of structural steel work • Other building/structural system where there is significant application of structural steelwork. Bear in mind that your selection needs to be suitable in terms of scope of work and learning outcomes
The final report submission should be approximately 5000 words. Tables, references, appendices, captions and the executive summary are all excluded from the word count. The word count and the depth of the discussion required for each section should reflect the mark percentage given in the rubric below. The document structure below will guide you on how to successfully write the report:

Group cover page Executive Summary Table of Contents  1. Overview of structure  • Location and type of structure • Project details including cost and timeline  • Types of structural components used • External photos of structure and location 2. Design documentation  • List design documentation collected • Discussion of architectural/structural drawings and geotechnical report • Any problems in obtaining documentation clearly outlined 3. Site visit documentation  • Discussion of site visit(s) • Comparisons made between photos taken and drawings collected of key structural components • Variations from original drawings and defects noted 4. Structural system  • Detailed description of all key structural components 5. Loads and load calculations  • Discuss the types of design loads on your chosen structure and how these loads are resisted by the structure • Calculate the loads acting on one beam and one column from your structure • Calculate strength of the 2 members and compare to the design action 6. Connection detail • Discuss five different connections used in the structure 7. Construction of steel structures • Discuss the five aspects of the construction of your structure 8. Research topic: composite structures

format should answer the below elements

Collect the original design documentation, i.e. structural engineer’s drawings and study the drawings in detail and digest the information. Submission of drawings and other documents via CD/USB is required to be attached to the final hardcopy submission, • Visit the structure to document the construction of the project by taking photos of the major components, including footings and the superstructure with particular focus on the steel members and connection details. Photos should be included wherever appropriate throughout the assignment, • Summarise the structural solutions provided by the engineers for the sub-structure and particularly the superstructure. Discuss the types of structural members,

• Discuss the structural resistance of the structural system against horizontal design action from wind effect, vertical design action including both downward and upward lifting, and the overall stability of the structure. The wind pressure actions and internal member forces due to live and dead loads of 2 selected members are to be calculated. I.e. one beam and one column. These member design actions are to be compared to the capacity of the 2 members. • Study five connection details at various locations from the original consultant’s drawings with written explanation and annotation on drawings and a comparison to site photos. Explain at these connections how the forces (axial, shear and bending) are transferred. • Discuss the following aspects of the construction of your chosen structure: o Prefabrication of the steel components, o construction sequence, o ease and safe erection procedures, o efficient site management, o material handling • RESEARCH TOPIC: Research different types of composite steel-concrete members and structures used throughout the construction industry. Comment on the relevancy to your project,
