Discussion 2: Economics of Education
On pages 102–106 in your textbook, Brimley uses a table to highlight significant funding differences between states that use a form of pupil weighting for funding special education and special needs students. For example, a Visually Impaired (VI) student attending school in Arizona receives a weight of 4.806 (almost 5 times the funding of a regular general education student), the same VI student in Kentucky is weighted at 2.35, and 3.8 in Oklahoma.
Review the table on pp. 102-106 and evaluate the equity or fairness of such large variances in the amount of money allocated to educate special needs students. How would these large variances impact you if you were a special education student, parent of a special education student, special education teacher, school district and/or taxpayer?
