M3 CP – Awareness Poster (Part 1)

Hiroshima Appeals by YusakuKamekura, 1983, ARTstor

Now that you have completed the current module readings and Lynda.com video training tutorials, you are ready to produce your preliminary work. In this section (Part 1), you will develop your sketches and project concepts for your awareness poster. Be sure to follow the M1 Guidelines for Preliminary Sketches & Concept Development requirements, and take the time to carefully review the design brief, guidelines, format, and resources that are posted below before you begin developing your sketches and concepts.
Design Brief
Rather than selling a product or announcing an event, awareness posters raise consciousness about a cause. They attempt to persuade individuals to support an idea. Please create an awareness poster for a national or international social or political issue.
Guidelines
• Utilize tools and techniques learned in the Lynda.com video tutorials;
• Combine type, imagery, and other graphics, guided by elements and principles of design. (for text ideas go to Lynda.com Photoshop CC: Deke’s Techniques);
• Include a brief summary of your chosen topic, and describe why your design is effective;
• Upload your concepts and sketches to your Blogger account
• Provide a Constructive Peer Critique for a minimum of 2 peers
This project encourages you to thoroughly explore and take a stance on a social or political issue by the visual means of poster design. Your poster will encourage you and your peers to think critically about the visual and social impact of design.
Format
Poster size and format: 11″ x 17″ portrait (vertical), saved for the web as a jpeg.
Submitting your work to your blog
After you have completed your preliminary work, upload it to your blog. Include the name of your project and a brief statement about your work. Then create a new discussion topic and let your classmates know that your work has been uploaded by submitting a link (URL) to your blog, with the title of your project in the subject line of the discussion post. This allows your peers to take a look at your evolving work and critique it. You should view as many projects as possible and then choose two designs to comment on using this discussion area below (not the blog). Be sure to use the M1 Constructive Peer Critique structure when commenting on colleagues’ work.
