Criminal Justice Statistics Project

Description of the problem:

The Alston Wilkes Society (AWS) is a non-profit organization that provides re-entry programs to offenders preparing to re-enter society. AWS is contracted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to provide select federal offenders with programs to help the offenders make a smooth transition back into the community. Offenders are transferred to one of the four AWS facilities approximately 90 days prior to the offender’s release date. AWS provides 24-hour supervision of the offender during the offenders last 90 days. Along with housing and food AWS provides the offender with classes to help them be successful upon release. Offenders are also afforded the opportunity to search for employment while with AWS. With the opportunities afforded to the offenders that participate in the AWS program the thought is that the offenders will have a smooth transition back into society and have a lower risk of recidivism.

Research question—if you could conduct a research study at your current or last place of employment in a criminal justice oriented job, what would be your research question?  At least one of your questions must be phrased as “Is (variable)related to (variable)?”
What variable(s) would you need to address this research question? What level of measurement would the variable(s) be? What descriptive statistics would you calculate on the variable(s)?
Is the AWS program more effective in reducing recidivism than the normal Federal Burau of Prisons process?
